1. Use simple language
  • The specialist medical terminology or jargon used in health and care can often be confusing for people. For example “myocardial infarction” instead of “heart attack” or “cardiovascular disease ” instead of “heart disease”.
  • Often acronyms are used which also make it difficult for people to understand. For example IV (intravenous – medicines or fluids inserted via needle or tube within a vein).
  • Sometimes there is not a plain English equivalent for a medical term, and in those cases a medical dictionary can be useful.
